Tina Fey Shares Memories of Her Skinny and Chubby Years

Happy Birthday to our fave funny lady! Tine Fey turns 42 today. We’ve been fans of the actress, writer, and comedienne since her early days on Saturday Night Live . Like many of us, Tina’s weight has fluctuated over the course of her career, and to mark her birthday, we’re sharing some of her funnier quotes from juice cleanses to body image. Before making the leap from writers room to on-camera talent, Tina followed the pragmatic Weight Watchers program to drop pounds. But that doesn’t mean she hasn’t dabbled in more extreme techniques to lose weight. She explained to Jimmy Fallon , “I don’t really believe in those [cleanses] – your body’s not like a purse. You’re not supposed to turn it inside out and shake it. But I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t care. I just need to jump-start this.’ So I tried it.” After an allergic reaction caused her lips to swell, she abandoned a juice cleanse. Go figure. These days, Tina works out with trainer when she can fit a session into her hectic schedule, and if she can’t, she takes a walk. She’s even become a fan of yoga and the superfood kale. Before settling into her healthy weight, Tina experienced both sides of the weight equation and shared her memories of these phases in her book, Bossypants . In two short, consecutive chapters, she explains the positive and negatives of the different times. Keep reading for a brief excerpt after the break.

Energize Your Morning with 4 Wake-Up Moves

We are pumped to share one of our favorite stories from Self here on FitSugar! Can’t get through your morning without your daily java fix? You’re not alone. According to a survey conducted by the National Coffee Association, Americans spend an average of $164.71 on coffee per year. That’s almost enough for a monthly car payment or a couple of weeks worth of groceries! Want to wean yourself off of overdoing the caffeine without sacrificing your sanity? Then look no further than your local yoga studio . Warming up your body in the morning helps the natural release of endorphins, says Desiree Bartlett, a Los Angeles-based yoga instructor. Not only does yoga do the body good, the energy you cultivate in a yoga class stays with you all day long. “There is a natural gauging of energy and we release old thoughts or judgments we no longer need,” says Bartlett. “Through this practice of steadying the mind and observing the breath, the mind stays present, sharper and clearer because it is no longer reviewing the past or making to-do lists for the future.” Incorporate these four moves into your regular routine five days a week to start each day “with strength, clarity and a sense of empowerment.” Desiree may have shot these on the beach (we’re jealous!) but you can do them on your bedroom floor! 5 Things to Never Do During Indoor Cycling Class

Indoor cycling classes are an amazing cardio workout, but if you don’t know what you’re doing, you’ll walk away frustrated, or, even worse - injured. Compared to other group fitness classes, indoor cardio cycling is also a little harder to pick up on when trying it for the first time. After getting the lowdown on what to expect from your first class , follow these rules on things you should never do in an indoor cycling class. Arrive to class late : As a rule, be on time for any fitness class, but more so if you plan on riding. Since there is a cap on the amount of bikes in a class, most gyms require students to register ahead of time (either online or using a sign-up sheet). A few minutes before or after class starts, instructors often release unclaimed bikes to those on the waiting list. Show up late, and chances are the bike you registered for will be taken, or, if you didn’t sign up at all, the class will be full. Hop on the bike as-is : This is definitely not a one-size-fits-all scenario – the person who was on the bike previously may have a good 10 inches on you. To avoid injury and ensure a comfortable ride, adjust the bike to suit your body. You’ll also want to make sure the handlebars and seat are firmly secure to avoid any wobbling during class. Watch this video to learn the proper way to set up an indoor cycling bike . Find out what else you should never do during an indoor cycling class - including pedaling too fast – after the break!

ESPN Broadcaster Jenn Brown’s Wedding Workout and Dress Fitting Diet Tips

We are pumped to share one of our fave stories from Fitness Magazine here on FitSugar! As the reporter of ESPN’s College GameDay for football and basketball Jenn Brown travels almost 70 percent of the year. That might sound like a dream job, but when your dream wedding is coming up, all those late night drive-thru dinners and wonky work hours can take a toll on your shape! We caught up with Brown just days before her wedding, where she gave us her secrets to how she stayed slim on the road and prepped for her big day. What have you been doing differently to get ready for your wedding? I took a different approach to working out than I usually do. I am typically a cardio junkie; I’m always running on the treadmill and follow it with 45 minutes of lifting. For my wedding, I really wanted to focus on looking lean and toned. I had just come off of covering football, where I gained my usual footfall five [pounds] from eating on the road in all these towns with delicious food, so I had three months to get into shape. I started doing Pilates three to four times a week. It was weird to me that you could go and work out for an hour and not be dripping in sweat, but I’ve seen an amazing transformation because of it. Learn how Jenn stays fit on the road after the break.

Off the Court With Beach Volleyball Olympian Misty May-Treanor

The daughter of an Olympian and wife of a Major League Baseball player, professional beach volleyball player Misty May-Treanor knows a thing or two about competing. She even tangoed her way across the stage in Dancing With the Stars a few seasons ago. After winning back-to-back Olympic gold with teammate Kerri Walsh in Athens and Bejing, the duo is hoping for top honors again this Summer in London. While on the Nike campus in Beaverton, OR, I caught up with Misty, where she let me in on a few pregame rituals and what the scene is really like at the Olympic Village. Misty, 34, is looking forward to competing and isn’t letting her nerves get the best of her - the mark of a seasoned athlete. “I know when things are going to get me a little nervous, because nervous to me feels good.” Asked about pregame rituals, Misty says she and Kerri make a habit of jumping over the sideline to enter the court together, which is followed by a complicated handshake. She’ll also turn to music; to psych up before a match, she listens to anything from hip-hop to Euro. And, of course, the fans: Misty looks “at the stands and gets energy.” Find out what Misty says about the Olympic Village and her pregame meal after the break!
