Menopause is already the late stage in terms of reproduction for a woman, but even before she reaches this stage there is already the peri-menopausal stage. This marks the beginning of aging! No matter how hard it is for you to accept when you feel the first signs of mood swings, irritability, night sweats, hot flashes, insomnia, bodily aches and pains, migraine headaches and mental challenges, you thought that’s all there is to it. The next thing you know is your skin becomes a nightmare due to severe acne eruptions that were never there before! Losing one’s youth and seeing it in the mirror can be the most distressing for you only to be more shocked because of the huge acne on your face and body. Acne is not all there is to it; perimenopause comes with several cosmetic issues like skin dryness, wrinkles and age spots. The skin problems are due to the changing hormones due to perimenopause, which are now slowly being depleted of estrogen. Estrogen, which is responsible for cell regeneration and repair, is now decreased resulting to a decrease in collagen and elastin as well; the fibers responsible for the skin’s framework making it elastic and firm. What can you do to at least slow the aging process? There is no way to stop the process of aging, but there are ways that you can do to at least slow it down. The skin as it ages loses its moisture due to the sebaceous glands lessened activity, this adds up to the dryness resulting to wrinkling. So to counter dryness and wrinkles, remember to moisturize at least twice daily, one in the morning and one in the evening. Look for a good cream based moisturizer to add hydration to your skin and apply it while your face is still damp to lock in the moisture; plus look for a good skin protection with a high SPF to protect you from the sun’s UV rays as this also speeds up aging. Have a regular daily skin regimen using a good cleanser twice daily (preferably avoid soap based cleansers), a good exfoliant to be used at least once a week to remove your dead skin cells to give way to the healthy skin underneath it. Other than your regular moisturizer you can also buy a product that will give you additional hydration. Remember not to wipe your face with a towel, instead just pat it dry. A regular skin regimen will help prevent acne eruptions or if you already have acne, it prevents having them infected. If you are using make up daily, be sure to use a good make up remover so you don’t have to wipe off the makeup off your face. Wiping vigorously causes sagging of the skin, remember you only have enough collagen and elastin left, so be gentler with your face. Pay close attention now with your diet, it should be more of fruits and vegetables and less of too much sodium and fats. Fruits and vegetables are rich sources of fiber, antioxidants and phytochemicals that help delay aging and more importantly helps prevent many illnesses. Drinking at least 8 to 10 glasses of water gives added hydration to your skin and helps in getting rid of toxins in the body. Be sure to choose products that are gentler for your skin and body, avoid products with harsh chemicals as this will speed up the aging process. Lastly, you may have to discuss with your health provider the use of hormonal replacement therapy . Additional supplements like vitamin B, C, E and calcium plus other natural sources of fiber and phytochemicals will be beneficial. All these coupled with regular exercise and relaxation activities will surely help you with your problems with acne, skin dryness and all other menopausal conditions and complications that go with it.     Perimenopause Diet

    Use sugar and salt in moderation. Excess sodium is linked to high blood pressure. Processed meats should be avoided as they have been linked to cancer. Eat more fiber. Include cereals, whole-grain breads, pasta, rice, vegetables and fresh fruits. Add 2 to 4 servings of fruits and 3 to 5 servings of vegetables in your daily diet. Take Vitamin D enriched foods. Vitamin D is present in , salmon, cod liver oil, cereals and fortified milk.

    Perimenopause Diet
    Don’t overuse Vitamin D in your perimenopause diet as it can be toxic. Increase iron intake. Iron is found in lean red meat, poultry, fish, eggs, leafy green vegetables, nuts and enriched grain products Eat at least 3 servings of iron-rich foods a day . Increase your intake of calcium. Calcium is found in dairy products such as sardines, broccoli clams, and legumes.
    Eating and drinking 2 to 4 servings of dairy products and calcium-rich foods in your daily diet. This way you will reduce the loss of calcium from the bones which can cause osteoporosis. Some sources recommend 1500mg/day for women who are in perimenopause and menopause. Do not overdose as it affects the kidneys. Maximum should be 2000mg/day. Limit your alcohol intake. If possible don’t take alcohol at all as it increases symptoms. It can make hot flushes worse.
