Mars puts Snickers bars on a diet

Have you ever stood near the checkout of a grocery store and stared at the rack of chocolate bars, debating whether anyone would judge you for buying the king-size? You know the regular size is enough to satisfy your craving, but the bigger candy bar is only 40 cents more and it just… Looks. So. Good. Worry no more – Mars, Inc. is going taking that decision out of your hands. The company that produces M&Ms, 3 Musketeers, Snickers and Twix bars has vowed to stop shipping any Mars chocolate products that exceed 250 calories per portion by the end of 2013. Right now a regular Snickers bar has 280 calories and each Twix cookie bar has 130 calories (but let's be honest, who eats just one?). Mars will most likely stop producing its king-sized candy bars all together since the large Snickers bar weighs in at 510 calories. "We have a responsibility to help our consumers and the pets they love lead healthy lives," Mars said in a statement on its website . "We are committed to making sure the products we offer, and the ingredients they contain, can fit into a balanced diet." Mars also produces Dove chocolate bars, multiple kinds of pet food, several gum brands and Uncle Ben's rice products. This move is part of an agreement Mars signed with Michelle Obama's Partnership for a Healthier America. Mars is part of the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, a group of 16 manufacturers who have pledged to reduce 1.5 trillion calories by the end of 2015 through lower-calorie options and reducing portion sizes. "America's food and beverage companies have a strong track record of innovation and providing consumers with healthier products," said Lisa Gable, executive director of the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation in a press release. "The Foundation's member companies are giving Americans tools to reduce calorie consumption." Mars' statement goes on to note that the company has removed 97% of the trans fat in their chocolate products and plans to "reduce sodium levels in all Mars Food products globally by 25 percent by 2015." Mars has not addressed the total number of fat grams in each product or the amount of sugar – factors most experts agree play a big role in weight gain, especially for children. You may be doing yourself more harm than good, especially since one glass of red wine usually runs around 127 calories . And while scientists have researched resveratrol in many lab studies, there have been few studies in humans (and let’s not forget the recent news that a leading red wine researcher actually falsified data in dozens of studies on heart health and resveratrol). I’m going on vacation in a few weeks, and I can’t wait. I’m excited to see the sites and enjoy springtime in Europe, and I’m probably disproportionately excited about trying the local cuisine in every city. There is a reason I follow celebrity trainers who tweet : it’s often the best place to find the latest breaking news in their lives. And, it’s often uncensored, honest, and timely. If you follow trainer Jillian Michaels on Twitter, then I’m sure you’ve been glued to all her recent developments: She’s having a baby ! Jillian is taking the next year off to focus on becoming a “mommy.” The trainer is looking to adopt – not one, but two children! – and she’s currently in a home study process with an adoption agency. While she says that it “doesn’t matter to me” if they’re boys or girls, she is planning to adopt from Africa. This decision has nothing to do with the Women’s Health article from earlier this year, which quoted the trainer as saying she, “can’t handle doing that [pregnancy] to my body.” Jillian told the Los Angeles Times that she was misquoted and that she can’t have children because of medical issues. Season 11 of The Biggest Loser will be her last . We’ve got one more season to see Jillian whip individuals into shape, since next year’s season will be her last. FitSugar favorite Bob Harper will stay on the show, and will be joined by two new trainers. NBC is keeping the new trainers’ identity a secret, but we do know from Jillian that one is definitely a female . Contestants on season 11 will have the option of working out with Jillian and Bob or the newbies. She slams her kettlebell critics for good . Jillian has taken a lot of flak for her kettlebell techniques, which reached a climax in a controversial LA Times op-ed piece calling her a fraud. Via Twitter, Jillian’s bud Bob Harper tweeted: “we’re officially kettlebell certified. Tell all those A$$&$@”@ to suck it.” Both Bob and Jillian worked with “kettlebell master” Paul Katami , who is affiliated with the Kettlebell Concepts certification program.
