Bydureon, the once-weekly injection for treating patients with type 2 diabetes, has finally won the FDA’s okay. As Dow Jones Newswires reports , it’s been a long, bumpy road to approval for the drug’s developer, Amylin Pharmaceuticals. (Alkermes is behind the extended-release technology used to deliver the drug, a longer-acting version of Amylin’s twice-daily Byetta.) Amylin started working on the drug in 1999 and first applied for FDA approval — with its then-partner Lilly — a decade later. But the agency in 2010 said it needed more information “about the drug’s prescribing label and the companies’ risk-management plan to ensure the drug’s benefits outweigh its risks,” DJN reports. Later that year, the FDA said the info the companies provided wasn’t enough to approve it, asking for a new study looking at what high doses of the drug might do to heart rhythms. That study showed no problems. As the FDA was weighing the drug, Amylin and Lilly terminated their partnership . The prescribing label for Bydureon will carry a warning about certain thyroid tumors seen in rats who were exposed to the drug, DJN says.

Earlier this week we asked you which exercise myth had you convinced for way too long, and you weren’t too shy to let us know! We already debunked the myth that muscle turns into fat , but here are the most popular myths that you believed and why they are so completely untrue! Myth: Strength training makes you bulk up. You said: “[I believed] that strength training would make you bulk up – [but] it’s HARD for women to put on tons of muscle without really trying!!” – Gabriela Une Vie Seine Fact : Many of you said you believed the bulking myth. In reality, however, building huge muscle requires testosterone coupled with a serious weight-training regimen (not to mention a protein-filled diet), so you aren’t going to sculpt a bodybuilder physique unless you really want to. Strength training is an important part of any exercise routine; the more muscle mass you have, the higher your resting metabolic rate will be. And while the rate of muscle building depends on your body type, not only will strength training give you a higher calorie-burning rate, but it’ll make you more defined as well ( as celebrity trainer Jackie Warner says , “Would you rather have fat under those jeans or a little bit of tone?”). Myth: You can eat whatever you want as long as you exercise. You said: “[I believed that] if I work out everyday I could eat whatever I wanted. Duh!!!!” – Facebook user Brighty Fact: Whether or not you gain or lose weight is all about the math. Losing pounds happens when you have a caloric deficit, meaning you eat fewer calories then you burn. Whether you want to maintain, gain, or lose weight while you exercise, having your metabolic rate checked and wearing a heart rate monitor can help you know exactly how much you should be eating. What you eat is also important, especially if you’re training for a race; it’s important to find the perfect balance of fats, protein, and carbs that will keep you fueled and energized. Here is some advice from FitSugar reader sagebliss on how to de-stress; she shared these thoughts in the SageBliss Sugar community group . We all feel stressed out from time to time. Financial, work pressures, family pressures – so much to do, with so little time to do it all. Try these five tips to help ease the pressure and relieve stress Schedule time every day to disconnect from the daily grind and relax, even if it’s only for a few minutes. Shut off your cell phone, take a break from email and do something you enjoy. Reading, playing a musical instrument, listening to music, exercising, meditating, and taking a relaxing bath are all great ways to unwind and will be beneficial to your health. Get some distance from a stressful situation so that you can better gather your thoughts. If possible, take a day, or even a weekend, away from your usual surroundings - somewhere peaceful - and relax. Take a journal along so you can jot down any ideas. Distance away from problems can bring clarity. Solutions will come more easily when you are calm and relaxed than when you’re in the heat of battle. See more tips when you read more. Often we become stressed when confronted with changes in our lives. Change is a constant in life and refusing to accept it can cause stress levels to soar. When you are faced with a change, try to find the positives associated with it and go with the flow, rather than trying to resist it. Remember that every change presents an opportunity for you to grow. Change doesn’t cause stress - only your reaction to the change can cause stress. Many of us are over-extended with work, family, and other responsibilities. Trying to find the right balance can be difficult. The more we put off the items on our to-do list, the longer the list grows, and the more it contributes to elevated stress levels. Schedule a “Blitz Day” to knock out all those items you’ve been avoiding. Rise early in the morning and spend the entire day knocking out the items on your list. Your stress will be lower as you cross items off, but more importantly, you’ll realize just how effective and industrious you can be when you apply the full force of your will to accomplish things. Treat yourself to a pamper day. This is a day where you escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday living and enjoy some stress-free time. You’ll feel great and give your well-being a boost. Enjoy a light workout, a swim, a sauna, or a massage.Treat yourself to a manicure, pedicure, or facial. Continue reading over at SageBliss Sugar to see more great tips about achieving happiness. Some women seem to be able to eat anything in sight and yet remain reed slim, while others watch everything that they eat and yet pile on the pounds. A large international study conducted in Australia by the Monash Obesity and Diabetes Institute (MODI) at Monash University says that the reason for this is that it is not lack of willpower but brain cells that determine obesity . Normally the brain cells tell the body when to stop eating and when to burn energy; however these vital signals no longer reach because the brain cells become insulated due to a high fat die t. According to Professor Michael Cowley, the brain cells that get insulated results in the body being unable to know when to stop eating and had another consequence as well – that of the body being unable to know when to increase energy use and burn off excess calories. A high fat diet itself is responsible for the brain cells developing a certain way, and this is what determines appetite and energy expenditure. These brain circuits are formed very early in life and this is the reason why some people have the tendency to become obese very early on in life. Digg this! Stumble upon something good? When asked which trainer from The Biggest Loser you would want to work out with, Bob Harper edged out Jillian Micheals; he’s the nice one, right? With his new four-disc DVD series Inside Out Method , it looks like he is trying to change his rep. From yoga to intense cardio, Bob is ready to make you sweat, grimace, and shake – the more you complain, the harder he will make you work. Yes, it’s as if he can see you slack off through the TV, so he ups the ante to keep you and your core engaged. The DVDs are not about eye candy and loud pumping music; the aesthetic is simple (almost somber) with occasional arty camera work to spice things up. I appreciate that in one yoga pose, Bob acknowledges that you can’t see the TV screen, so he tells you to focus on his voice as he tells you what to do next. However, he does seem to take maniacal pleasure in pushing you and his studio clients to the limit. The workouts are intense and great for both men and women – this is not your Jane Fonda fitness routine. My hubby did all four workouts too, even warning me that Bob was crazy when he previewed a DVD before I could get to it first. For a description of each DVD and to take a gander at the series trailer, continue reading.

Planting your own vegetable garden is fun and rewarding, not to mention a money-saver when it comes to all the veggies it produces. If you’re new to gardening, then you may want to know a surprising fact. For some people, touching the leaves, stems, or veggies of certain plants can result in a red, dotty, itchy rash known as contact dermatitis . It can happen with zucchini, cucumber, pumpkins, or other plants that have prickly hairs on their vines. The rash can appear where the contact occurred on your skin, or it can show up on other areas of your body. To see what the rash looks like, just read more. If this rash appears after gardening, the best thing to do is wash your skin with cold water and a mild soap. Let your skin air-dry, and the rash should go away after an hour or so. If it doesn’t, or it’s really bothering you, apply an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream to reduce inflammation and relieve the itching and burning. If the rash still doesn’t go away, it’s best to see your doctor. To prevent this bizarre rash next time, wear gloves when handling your plants. Have you ever gotten a rash after gardening?
