Ample Supplies of Shingles Vaccine Return

Merck People 60 and older who want to ward off the risk of getting shingles now stand a better chance of getting the only approved vaccine, Merck’s Zostavax. As Dow Jones Newswires reports, Merck has restored supplies of the vaccine after several years of manufacturing problems limited availability. Now, back orders are filled and the drug maker has started running TV ads about the painful skin and nerve condition caused by the same virus behind chickenpox. (If you had chickenpox as a kid, there’s a risk that later in life you’ll get shingles, also called herpes zoster. And, as WSJ reported last year, the commonly held notion that shingles can only strike once in life appears to be false.) Even with supplies restored, though, Merck’s taking a softly-softly approach on the marketing: It’s not mentioning the drug by name in its ads and it’s holding back from targeting people in their 50s, even though the FDA approved expanding the vaccine’s use to that age group. There’s no guarantee the vaccine will prevent shingles, but it cuts the risk, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people 60 and up get the shot. Word of the restored supplies comes just weeks after a study published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases showed Zostavax reduced outbreaks of the disease in people in their 50s by nearly 70% compared with placebo. About a fifth of cases occur in people aged 50 to 59. As WSJ reported , the study — funded by the drug’s makers — didn’t assess how long the vaccine was effective or how it affected shingles-related nerve pain. For more on Zostavax and whether or not you should consider getting the jab, here’s WSJ’s primer from 2008 .

Docs Warn Of Complications From Cheap International Breast Implants

MIAMI (CBS4) – Zrinka Jurisa is a mother of one. She claimed that having a baby took a toll on her body, especially her breasts. “After I had my son everything went South,” Jurisa said. Although she lives in Miami now, Jurisa is originally from Venezuela and still has family there. “I needed some help,” explained Jurisa. That coupled with the fact that the breast augmentation surgery would cost her $2,000 in Venezuela, as opposed to about $8,000 in the U.S… about one-fourth the cost… she flew to a doctor in South America to get her breast implants. But the doctor used defective implants. He inserted P.I.P implants… Poly Implant Prosthesis. Those are illegal in the U.S. As Dr. Phillip Craft with the Miami Institute on Brickell explained, “This is a breast implant approved in the U.S., it has a thick exterior and medical grade silicone inside. The P.I.P implant has a thin exterior and industrial grand silicone inside.” Craft told CBS4′s Cynthia Demos that about 300,000 P.I.P implants were sold worldwide, tens of thousands of them in Latin America. “They tend to rupture three to five times more than durable brands,” said Jurisa. If they rupture, the patient can suffer from Lupus or rheumatoid arthritis and the list goes on. Dr Craft will be removing Jurisa’s P.I.P implants and replacing them with safe implants. “The medical tourism. You see it a lot,” said Craft. The problem is so big, the Miami Institute is holding seminars to educate the public as to what is going on and letting them know that P.I.P implants are no longer used anywhere. The company that made them has gone bankrupt. Patients like Jurisa say education is key. “Take a little measures in regards to prevention and maybe have them replaced,” Jurisa said. The Miami Institute is working with the people who have the defective implant to get it fixed at a discounted rate. The seminars at the Miami Institute which is located at the Four Seasons Hotel on Brickell are set for Wednesday, January 25th, Wednesday, February 1st and Wednesday, February 8th.

Aging Well News

I’ve used the term “anti-aging” before, but I’ve never been entirely comfortable with it. To me, there’s something slightly strange about the concept. After all, I’m not opposed to the process of growing older. Get Fit For Summer Challenge 6: A Reader Runs Around Texas

Check out FitSugar reader bjeanne18 ‘s description of her daily Texas run! She posted this pic in the Get Fit For Summer community group as part of the sixth challenge in the Get Fit For Summer giveaway . By doing so, she’s eligible to win a $100 New Balance gift card! So the challenge this week was to try a running workout and to snap a picture of any “spectacular” views. Unfortunately, I don’t have that many awesome views near my apartment, so instead, I snapped a pic of my completely ’80s-reminiscent running gear I took for a spin. Go ahead and laugh, it’s a Monday, and it’s freakin’ hot here in Texas – so the tacky looking sweatband is a must in my books! I was super pumped with my run – I went three miles in less than 27 minutes, stopped and walked five minutes to let my heart rate calm down, and finished out the four miles strong; all completed in under 40 minutes! No, that is not an incredibly amazing time for most runners, but for me it’s pretty huge. Hear about the health obstacles bjeanne18 overcame after the break!

Why the Remove Cleanse and Detox Is Worth Doing

I’ve never been a fan of cleansing. Drinking nothing but pumped-up lemonade for 10 days seems crazy, and the plethora of all-juice cleanses with their celebrity backing aren’t appealing either. I like chewing my food; I also believe in the body’s ability to cleanse itself. And despite any substantial medical evidence validating the benefits of cleansing , the market is saturated with detox programs. It’s clear that people believe their bodies are loaded down with crap, and they want it out. Even though I was a doubter, I decided to try one – maybe Gwyneth , Salma , and Demi knew something I didn’t. Could I end up with more energy, glowing skin, and a cleaner colon? Maybe. After careful consideration, I settled on Dr. Frank Lipman ‘s 14-day Remove program ($199). Dr. Lipman is an actual MD, and you eat solid food on his program – win! The idea behind the Remove diet is to get rid of foods that people commonly show sensitivity to with hopes of seeing how your own body is affected. What’s left is a diet rich in unprocessed foods and a promise of more energy and mental clarity: “expect to feel like you just hit the restart button.” But did it work? Find out when you read more. It did. I almost hate saying that. I never thought I’d be the kind of person who would recommend cleansing, but I am. I felt more alert and focused while on the program, and my midafternoon slump was a thing of the past. When I woke up in the morning I didn’t feel puffy, and I never felt bloated, tired, or uncomfortable after eating. I had tons of energy after work, but still managed to get a full night’s rest. Most importantly, I was never hungry and rarely felt deprived. Here’s the skinny: What it is – A 14-day program consisting of three daily shakes, twice daily supplements, and two light meals made up of foods from the approved grocery list . The diet is sugar-, gluten-, alcohol-, dairy-, and caffeine-free. Other foods are off limits too, including soy, corn, factory-farmed meat, and nightshades. The fiber-rich shakes contain herbs that help detox the liver, and the supplements help balance the digestive system. There are also glutamine capsules that help with sugar cravings. With a pricetag of $199, the system is definitely not cheap – I was lucky to have a kit gifted to me from Eleven Eleven Wellness . What to expect – This really depends on your lifestyle. Since I don’t drink much caffeine to begin with, I had it easy. But if you are a coffee addict, wean yourself off of caffeine before starting the cleanse. I personally had the hardest time giving up gluten and alcohol. I missed (whole wheat) bread and pasta and certain grains. You’ll also do best if you don’t eat out. On the occasions that I did go to a restaurant, I managed to find something, but it was never as good as if I made it myself. What you will feel – There are two aspects to this: mental and physical. I was never hungry on this cleanse. I started off my morning with a shake, had another before a light lunch, and another before a light dinner. I was also surprised to find that the shakes tasted good, especially when blended together with fruit. I felt energized and clearheaded, both good things. Depending on your current diet, your body may need time to adjust to all of the changes. From a mental standpoint, I sometimes felt deprived. I missed my favorite restaurants and craved a cocktail on the weekends. I got upset that I couldn’t have dessert. But it was interesting to see how my cravings were mostly in my head. Luckily, these feelings of missing out were gone within the first week. That being said, I was incredibly excited to have a burger and a beer when it was all over. The takeaway -  Besides feeling more energized, I really did learn how certain foods affect me. Once the cleanse is over, Dr. Lipman suggests introducing “off-limit foods” back into your diet slowly. That way, you can see if you have certain sensitivities. I was surprised to find out that gluten makes me feel tired and weighted down, so now I only eat it occasionally and try to avoid it at work. What’s great about this program is that it really teaches you to make a lifestyle change when it comes to your eating habits by eliminating most of the processed junk that’s out there. Not only would I do this program again, but I’m planning to. While I’ve done shorter versions of this detox following just the dietary guidelines, I’ve not had the same benefits that the shakes and supplements seem to provide. I’m thinking that after I get back from my everything-goes vacation in March, it might be time to try the Remove program again. If the idea of such a strict two-week diet bothers you, Dr. Lipman also offers the Revive and Sustain programs, both of which are less intense.

Exercise on the Last Day of the Year

The holidays are almost over, and I definitely ate and drank more in these past few weeks than I do in a month. OK, maybe I’m exaggerating, but coupled with exercising less, I definitely feel like a blob. My first New Year’s resolution is to get back on track with regular exercise and eating routine, but why wait until Jan. 1? Join me and jump-start your health kick a little early and exercise on the last day of the year. Go for a jog in your neighborhood, sign up for that gym membership , go skiing with friends, or take a long walk in the woods. You’ll feel good having sweated it out before the last big splurge of New Year’s Eve, and it’ll get you in the habit of working out like you vowed to in 2011 .
