4 Coffee Break Tips to Boost Your Energy (It’s Not Just About Caffeine!)

We are pumped to share one of our favorite stories from Self here on FitSugar! Are the words “coffee break” kind of an oxymoron to you? Probably so if you are just guzzling your grande while you are still at your desk and barely even looking up from your work. While it’s true that caffeine can provide you with a jolt of energy, taking an actual break to enjoy your coffee could be the key to getting a better energy buzz from your cup of joe. The folks at Gevalia introduced me to the idea of fika , the traditional Swedish coffee break that Swedes take two times per day to enjoy a cup of coffee and a snack. Self has reported that taking a true coffee break can leave you feeling happier and more sociable. I thought the idea sounded interesting and I gave it a try for myself and found that I felt more energized from the combination of stepping away from my work and drinking the coffee than I normally do from just downing my java on the go. Read on for some ways you can enjoy a fika of your own.

Measles cases found after Super Bowl festivities

Indiana state officials say they have confirmed two cases of measles and two probable cases of the highly infectious disease. Last Friday, one of the confirmed patients from Hamilton County, Indiana, visited a free outdoor festival called the Super Bowl Village, a three-block area of downtown Indianapolis which was turned into an open area for games, concerts and activities. The patient did not go inside the Indiana Convention Center where there were more NFL-related activities taking place. Measles is a respiratory disease which is very contagious.  It spreads through sneezes, coughs and droplets in the air.  Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose and a rash all over the body. Infection can be prevented if you are vaccinated.  About 200,000 people visited the Super Bowl Village on Friday, according to CNN affiliate WISH-TV .  The patient felt sick after leaving the Superbowl Village and went to see a doctor, the state’s health commissioner Dr. Gregory Larkin told the station.   Larkin said that the doctor was suspicious of the symptoms and took a blood test, which confirmed the measles diagnosis. Larkin also said the fact that the patient never went to the indoor Superbowl activities is a good thing: "When you're outdoors with the wind blowing and so forth, it's a less contagious atmosphere." The health departments in New York and Massachusetts have also been notified to make fans who traveled to the game to be aware of possible risks. The use of the measles vaccine had nearly eliminated the disease in the United States. However, there has been a resurgence of measles recently as some parents have decided not to vaccinate their children.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one or two out of  1,000 children with measles will die, and worldwide 200,000 people die each year from the disease.  Measles hit a 15-year high in 2011 in the United States, according to the to the CDC. There were 220 cases last year, compared with the average 60 to 70 cases per year. The CDC found that 87% of the people infected didn't get the vaccine, while the other 13% were too young to get it. 4 Ways to Prep a Healthy Dinner Quickly

Just one bad decision – like quieting your rumbling stomach with greasy takeout – can undo a day of healthy eating. If you’ve been sabotaging your diet because of unhealthy dinner decisions, use these tips to cook a healthy meal without sacrificing time. Double the amount: Week already looking full? Make extra servings the next time you cook so you can have healthy leftovers for the rest of the week. If you’re worried about overeating, separate the leftovers into single-serving containers. Prep your veggies: Spend time at the beginning of the week washing, cleaning, and cutting veggies, so you always have salad ingredients or something to snack on. Having veggies cut will also encourage you to use them more in your cooking since you know you have them at the ready. Keep unhealthy food out of the kitchen: When I’m hungry, I reach for the first snack I can find, which usually isn’t nutritious and often comes in a bag. If you’re the same, stocking the fridge with healthy snacks can help, but not if you’re tempted by all the junk food in your pantry. Keep unhealthy foods out of the house or divide your snacks into smaller portions to avoid ravenously going through an entire bag of chips before you even make dinner. Eat a balanced lunch and snack: A lunch full of fiber and protein from fresh veggies, fruits, and lean meats will keep you full throughout the afternoon much more than a carb bomb or a too-restrictive meal. Following lunch with a healthy snack can lessen the temptation to order takeout once you get home since you’ll be feeling full and satisfied. Check out our healthy snack ideas to get started.

Challenge Your Abs and Work on the Weight Bench

You’re probably familiar with doing ab exercises on the floor, an exercise ball, or even on a BOSU, but have you ever made use of the weight bench? Rather than moving to a floor to complete your crunches, try these exercises in between sets of arm, chest, and back work using the bench - you’re already there, make use of it. Expert Crunch trainer Livia Jenvey offers up these five exercises that target all the major muscle groups in your abdomen: the transverse muscles that wrap all the way around the trunk of your body, the obliques or muscles on the side of your abdomen, and the rectus muscles, which run down the center of your belly and are responsible for creating your six-pack. Can’t Make It to the Gym? 3 Ways to Still Sweat It Out

Even when we have the best intentions, there are days when getting to the gym is impossible. Mostly because we’re dealing with a crazy schedule that involves balancing other obligations or appointments. On days where getting to the gym is not an option, but neither is skipping out on a workout, you do have options. Check out three ways to exercise even on days when you have to skip the treadmill! Pop in a DVD : On days where you miss a class or skip out on a strength training session, a fitness DVD is often the next best thing. There are a wide variety of workouts to choose from, and the instructors do their best to keep you motivated while also educating you on good form. Because a DVD workout is structured, you often get more out of it than you would when attempting to make your own at-home workout. Need inspiration? Then check out some of our favorite fitness DVDs . Head outdoors : Whether you run, cycle, or hike, one of the easiest ways to compensate for a missed gym day is to head outside for your workout. If exercising outdoors isn’t your ideal, remind yourself that it can help prevent colds and flu by strengthening your immune system . On top of that, avoiding the gym for a day isn’t always a bad thing: a fitness center is one of the germiest places a person can encounter in their day-to-day routine. It’s also likely that you’ll burn more calories, too. Without the assistance of cardio equipment, your body will have to work harder during its workout. Squeeze in fitness wherever you can : Whether you take the stairs at work, do squats in the most ordinary places , or walk around when taking a phone call, find as many ways as you can to move throughout the day. You might be surprised to see how many calories you can burn from just five minutes of exercise .

How Bad Posture Affects You

Sitting at your desk? Here’s a friendly reminder to sit up straight. Bad posture affects you all the time, from when you sit in your car to how you walk. At a recent session with my personal trainer, I was reminded of just that fact. We were going through a set of balance exercises and I kept having to stop to straighten my back to keep myself from hunching over while I jumped on and off the weight bench. Having to constantly correct your form during a workout isn’t the only way bad posture affects you. Read on for why bad posture is really so bad.
